Bandwidth Allocation Algorithms on Tree-Shaped All-Optical Networks with Wavelength Converters

چکیده
In this paper we consider the problem of allocating optical bandwidth on a tree-shaped network when wavelength conversion is allowed. We consider both converters with full conversion capabilities and converters with limited capabilities. We give upper and lower bounds on the number of full wavelength converters necessary to fully utilize the optical bandwidth available. For converters of limited capabilities we show that, for general trees, converters of degree dL=3e + 1 are suucient to route a set of requests of load L using at most 3=2L wavelengths. For the special case of binary trees, we show that converters of degree O(p L) are suucient to route a set of requests of load L using exactly L wavelengths. The study of limited capabilities converters is based on graph construction problems that might be of their own interest.

Wavelength Routing in All-optical Tree Networks: A Survey
We study the problem of allocating optical bandwidth to sets of communication requests in all{optical networks that utilize Wavelength Division Multiplexing (WDM). WDM technology establishes communication between pairs of network nodes by establishing transmitter{receiver paths and assigning wavelengths to each path so that no two paths going through the same ber link use the same wavelength. O...
متن کاملOn the Complexity of Wavelength Converters
In this paper the capabilities of an all{optical network model that supports wavelength conversion are investigated. The model applies to tree{shaped optical networks and was established in 3]. A few wavelength converters are maintained at each non{leaf network node. We present a greedy wavelength routing algorithm that allocates a total bandwidth of w(l) wavelengths to any set of requests of l...
متن کاملEfficient wavelength routing in trees with low-degree converters
We study the use of limited wavelength conversion in order to increase bandwidth utilization in WDM (wavelength division multiplexing) all-optical networks. A measure of the complexity of a converter is given by its maximum degree (i.e., the maximum number of potential conversions of any given wavelength). We present trade-oos between the complexityof the converters and the number of wavelength...

In this paper, we address the issue of efficiently allocating wavelengths to communication requests in wavelength division multiplexing (WDM) optical networks. We present a simple greedy algorithm and study its performance on directed binary fiber trees. We prove that our algorithm guarrantees a 5=3-approximationfor wavelengths assignment in binary tree shaped WDM optical networks. We also prov...
متن کاملOptimal placement of wavelength converters in trees, tree-connected rings, and tree of rings
In wavelength routed optical networks, wavelength converters can potentially reduce the requirement on the number of wavelengths. A recent study [Proceedings of 9th ACM-SIAM Symposium on Discrete Algorithms (1998)] raised the following problem: choose a minimum number of nodes in a WDM network to place wavelength converters so that any set of paths requires the same number of wavelengths as if ...
